Top 6 things to do in Auckland

With the majority of international flights heading for Auckland on the North Island, most travellers tend to start their New Zealand working holiday in the ‘City of Sails’ – instantly falling for the city’s youthful good looks, creative buzz and easy access to beaches, wineries and wildlife. Auckland is also where our Work New Zealand programs start, with our team on hand to help you get set up with a job, bank account, tax number and more.

Here are six things to do when you arrive.

Sky Tower

An icon hovering 238 metres above Auckland’s skyline, the Sky Tower is the tallest building in New Zealand. Glass-fronted lifts take you up to a glass floor viewing platform where you can see (on a clear day) up to 80km in every direction.

Auckland Harbour Bridge

Another architectural icon, beginner adrenalin junkies can get their kicks walking across the top of the bridge for stunning views over the harbour. Or if that wasn’t enough of a thrill, you can also bungy jump off it.

Maungakiekie/One Tree Hill

In the heart of the city but feeling like you’re in the middle of the countryside, climb one of New Zealand’s largest intact (and inactive) volcano cones. It’s a great place to take a picnic or to blow away the cobwebs from the night before.

Waiheke Island

Just a 40-minute ferry from downtown Auckland, Waiheke is a weekend favourite amongst Aucklanders. May have something to do with the golden beaches, world-class vineyards and incredible fresh produce in the cafés and boutique restaurants.

Hauraki Gulf whale watching

In the City of the Sails, you’re never too far from the ocean. Leaving from downtown Auckland, hop on board an eco boat to spot marine life including whales, dolphins, seals and rare birdlife in the rich waters of the Hauraki Gulf.

MOTAT

Standing for the Museum of Transport and Technology, MOTAT is the largest museum of its kind in New Zealand. Full of interactive exhibitions, it’s a great way to spend an afternoon. Plus, there is an old-style tram that takes you between the two museum sites.
