Australia has one of the highest minimum wages in the world – currently AUD $20.33 per hour or AUD $772.60 per week. The cost of living in Australia can be high, especially in the bigger cities. However, particularly if you’re willing to do a stint of regional farm work or bar work where you’re busy working at weekends and evenings – then it’s more than enough to live off and still save up to fund the next leg of your journey.

On the job

Typical backpacker jobs include hospitality, tourism, labouring, sales, retail, customer service, admin, promotions and fruit picking. These jobs usually come with no expectation for how long you’ll stay, making them ideal for working on the move. It’s also possible to find work in your professional field, although employers can be reluctant to take on short-term staff. Look out for agency work, freelance roles and mat cover opportunities.

Field trip

The classic gap year job – backpackers are the backbone of much of Australia’s harvest industry. With no skills required and few outgoings, you’ll earn around AUD $20 an hour and often live with other backpackers in shared accommodation. Hard work but fun, fruit picking jobs are a great way to make friends, work outdoors and have an authentic Aussie experience. Plus, if you do three months, you can apply for a second visa.
